Manually merge Hyper-V Differencing Disks with Parent (Delete Snapshots)

If you have avhd differncing disks and you want to merge all data into a single vhd file but you do not see snapshots to delete in the Hyper-V console, follow these steps:

  1. If you have multiple avhd sort them first, use the inspect disk wizard to find which is parent for which
  2. After you have identified the order of disks, using the Edit Disk wizard from the console start from the youngest differencing disk in the chain and merge it with its parent until you reach the parent disk.

Browse to the first AVHD disk

Choose Merge

To the parent virtual hard disk

The operation will take a while depending on your disk size, in the end you will have a single VHD file.
